What are Carbon Filters?

The purpose of a Carbon water filter is to remove chemicals, odors and bad taste. Activated carbon, also called activated charcoal or activated coal is the main filtering element. It is the primary filtering element because is it extremely porous and, therefore, has a large surface area used for chemical absorption. It is referred to as Active because of its large surface area; 1 gram of activated carbon is roughly equal to one tenth of a football field. Granular Activated Carbon is generally used in water treatment, and deodorization which is perfect for an in-line filter component on a pou water cooler. Since city water is treated with chlorine and other chemicals to remove bacteria, the water is often left with a bad odor or chlorinated taste which should be removed. Carbon filters are usually used as a secondary filter in a 2 stage or 3 stage filtration system. Manufacturers recommend that carbon filter cartridges be changed every six months.
